Performance Management Unit

To help turn his vision for Los Angeles into reality Mayor Villaraigosa created the Performance Management Unit (PMU) in September 2006. Modeled on a similar effort by British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the Performance Management Unit closely tracks the initiatives and objectives of City departments to ensure that they are aligned with the Mayor's goals. Staff in the PMU assist the Mayor’s policy teams with the development and implementation of the Mayor’s top priorities; measure progress towards City goals; help General Managers make effective and efficient use of City resources; and help the Mayor drive progress and deliver tangible improvements in critical services for the people of Los Angeles.

During regular meetings with the Mayor and his policy staff, the PMU gives a status report on progress of a particular initiative or policy area as requested by the Mayor. The status reports include a general overview of progress to date on an initiative, milestones or accomplishments achieved, emerging issues or potential problems that may cause delay or hindrances to achieving the initiative goal or require the Mayor's future attention. The aim of the PMU is to help the Mayor drive progress and deliver tangible improvements in the City services the citizens of L.A. rely upon.
