Energy and Environment

Mayor Villaraigosa’s plan is to transform Los Angeles into the greenest big city in the world and into an environmentally sustainable city.

Within the last century, Angelenos built a great city, with a strong and vibrant economy. Our population grew from 100,000 residents in 1900 to 3.7 million in 2000. But we paid a price for that progress. In too many places, the Los Angeles we see is polluted and paved over.

With Mayor Villaraigosa, the era of tradeoffs between economic growth and environmental protection is over. The City of Los Angeles is now a leader in the fight against global warming and a making the necessary changes to become a model of sustainability, the center of a thriving green economy, where green technology is blooming and green jobs are flourishing.

The Villaraigosa Energy and Environment plan focuses on improving public health, un-paving paradise, and making environmental stewardship a way of life. While many of these investments will pay dividends over time, progress is already being made.

  • Improve public health by enhancing the environment
  • "Unpave paradise" by increasing green space
  • Promote environmental stewardship by City of Los Angeles and Angelenos
"'L.A.'s plan shows that cities can take local action to find global solutions,' Governor Schwarzenegger said in a statement." Quoted in the Los Angeles Daily News, 5/15/07
