MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA ANNOUNCES COMPLETION OF HYDE PARK WEST ATSAC/SIGNAL SYNCHRONIZATION PROJECT
82% of City's traffic signals are now synchronized.
LOS ANGELES - Continuing to improve traffic flow throughout the City of Los Angeles, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa today announced the completion of another Automated Traffic Surveillance and Control (ATSAC) project.
This brings the total number of synchronized traffic lights in the City to 3,597 out of 4,400 (82%).
The Hyde Park West Project in South Los Angeles includes 70 intersections and 15 left turn-arrows.
“The completion of LA’s latest traffic signal synchronization system makes 82% of our City’s traffic signals synchronized,” said Mayor Villaraigosa. “In addition to reducing travel times and delays at intersections, signal synchronization reduces fuel use and emissions, helping to make Los Angeles the greenest big city in the nation.”
ATSAC is a computer-based traffic signal control system that monitors traffic conditions. The central computer makes signal timing changes automatically based on traffic conditions detected. In addition to reducing travel times and delays at intersections, signal synchronization reduces fuel use and emissions by reducing the time cars spend idling at red lights.
The Hyde Park West signal synchronization project will help improve the north-south traffic flow on Crenshaw Boulevard and Western Avenue as well as on east-west arterials. The project will improve travel speed up to 13% and reduce intersection delay by up to 24%.
"We are excited to be bringing the Automated Traffic Surveillance and Control (ATSAC) system to Hyde Park. Traveling on this part of Crenshaw Blvd. will take less time and we'll be able to monitor traffic conditions better," said Rita L. Robinson, LADOT General Manager.
“By turning signals all over the City green, we will help drivers get where they are going faster and greener, and that’s good news for everyone,” added Mayor Villaraigosa.
Five signal synchronization projects have been completed in the last four years. Hyde Park West is the first of seven ATSAC projects expected to be completed in this fiscal year.
Mayor Villaraigosa projected that all traffic signals in the City will be synchronized in 2012 using State Prop 1B funding specifically dedicated to this project.
The $4.5 billion Prop 1B The Highway Safety, Traffic Reduction, Air Quality, and Port Security Bond Act of 2006 was approved by the voters 1B on November 7, 2006.
