MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA’S STATEMENT ON THE APPOINTMENT OF S. DAVID FREEMAN AS TEMPORARY GENERAL MANAGER OF THE LOS ANGELES DEPARTMENT OF WATER AND POWER
LOS ANGELES - Mayor Villaraigosa released the following statement on the appointment of S. David Freeman as Temporary General Manager of the LADWP:
“With over 50 years of experience as an environmentalist and manager of numerous American publicly owned utilities, David Freeman is one of the original green pioneers. He was the first person with a specific responsibility for energy issues in the federal government; chaired the Tennessee Valley Authority where he cut sulfur oxide emissions in half, stopped construction of eight large nuclear power plants and led a massive energy conservation program; and has served as the general manager of large public power agencies, including the LADWP.
I have every confidence that he will lead the Department of Water and Power during this transition period beginning with a cost-cutting review of the Department budget prior to any rate increases, undertaking the search for a new General Manager, accelerating the Department's water pipe replacement program, and continuing the work to reach 40 percent renewables and coal free by 2020.”
