MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA LAUNCHES CITY OF LOS ANGELES CENSUS 2010 INITIATIVES
City-wide call to action to communicate the importance of a complete and accurate Census count in the City of Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES -- Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa today joined Council President Eric Garcetti, Councilmembers Wendy Greuel and Jose Huizar, director of the U.S. Census Bureau Los Angeles Regional Office Jamie Christy, Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Taboo, member of the Black Eyed Peas, to launch the City of Los Angeles 2010 Census initiatives.
“Working together, we are launching a citywide educational and community outreach campaign”, Mayor Villaraigosa said, “forging partnerships between government agencies, community groups, faith-based organizations, labor unions, and business”.
Just one year before the April 2010 Census count begins in the City of Los Angeles, Mayor Villaraigosa issued a call to action for Angelenos to join the efforts to ensure that every resident is counted.
“The Census is too important to leave anything to chance,” Mayor Villaraigosa said.
The Census 2010 will determine how many representatives will speak for Los Angeles in Washington, D.C. and Sacramento, as well as the City’s share under most federal and state funding programs.
“We don’t know where we’re going if we don’t know who we are,” Council President Garcetti said. “And the Census is not only mandated every ten years, it has been a tradition in this country since 1790, something that we do to ensure we know who America is.”
Jamie Christy, director of the U.S. Census Bureau Los Angeles Regional Office, said work has already begun to ensure every resident is counted.
“There are over a thousand Angelenos doing work for the Census Bureau verifying addresses right now,” Christy said. “This questionnaire is ten questions long, and it should take the average household ten minutes to complete. It’s simple, it’s safe, it’s confidential,” he said.
Additionally, Mayor Villaraigosa will appeal to the residents of the City of Los Angeles to become volunteers or business partners, to communicate the critical information to their own neighborhoods or undercounted communities.
