MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA ANNOUNCES OVER 16,000 JOBS FOR LOS ANGELES YOUTH
With a major boost from federal stimulus money, Mayor Villaraigosa launches
Hire LA 2009 Youth Employment Program aiming to place over 16,000 youths in
jobs
LOS ANGELES – Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa along with Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger, today announced the creation of over 16,000 jobs for Los
Angeles youth with the launching of Hire LA. With a $20.3 million infusion of
federal stimulus dollars, this program will create a record number of jobs placing
more youth in good jobs than at any time in the last 15 years.
“Hire LA will create over 16,000 jobs for Los Angeles youth and set them oncourse
toward a steady paycheck and a better life,” Mayor Villaraigosa said.
“Today, Los Angeles becomes the first city in the nation to create jobs for young
people using federal stimulus dollars dedicated towards youth employment.”
Also joining Mayor Villaraigosa and Governor Schwarzenegger were Fran Inman,
Board Chair for the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce; Councilmembers
Jan Perry, Herb Wesson, Bill Rosendahl, and Jose Huizar; Monica Garcia,
LAUSD School Board President; Marshall Drummund, Chancellor of the Los
Angeles Community College District; and actress Tichina Arnold who has been
active in the Hire LA program.
Leading the nation in job creation for youth, Hire LA is placing over 16,000 young
people in jobs beginning this May and going through July 2010. This represents
the first use in the nation of stimulus funds to support youth employment. The
City of Los Angeles is receiving $20.3 million of federal stimulus money
(American Recovery & Reinvestment Act) which will support a total of 7,388
positions for young people here in Los Angeles. This is in addition to 2,000 jobs
currently allocated through the city’s general fund, 2,000 pledged from the private
sector, 2,000 from the Community College District, and 3,000 from the Los
Angeles Unified School District.

Hire LA's Youth Employment Program works to provide young adults ages 14-24
with employment opportunities ranging from summer jobs to full time
employment.
Since it’s inception in 2006, Hire LA has placed over 28,000 young Angelenos in
jobs.

Hire LA consists of nine diverse programs:
• HIRE LA
Working with the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, Hire LA places young
adults ages 16 – 24 in paid, entry-level, full-time private sector jobs. The
Chamber sponsors job-training workshops where job seekers earn a “Work
Readiness Certificate” and interview for jobs with participating employers.
• LEARN & EARN
This program targets 11th and 12th grade students that have not passed the
California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). Youth participants attend
school and receive CAHSEE test preparations in the morning and work parttime
in the afternoon.
• SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM (SYEP)
This traditional summer youth employment program is administered by the
Community Development Department. Young adults ages 14-21, living in the
City of Los Angeles who have the right to work in the United States and
qualify as a low income family are eligible.
• LA PUBLIC WORKS SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM
The LA Public Works program focuses on outreach efforts to expand recycling
and protecting the environment in Los Angeles. Youth ages 14-21 are
eligible.
• LA CITY WORKS
The LA City Works program prepares participants for employment in entrylevel
positions with the City of Los Angeles, focusing on demand occupations
with clearly defined career paths.
• CLEAN AND GREEN (L.A. CONSERVATION CORPS.)
L.A. Conservation Corp. provides employment, leadership and service
opportunities that allow youth to work part-time on urban beautification
projects throughout the City. Clean and Green works with youth ages 14-17.
• DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION AND PARKS (SUMMER JOBS)
The Department of Recreation and Parks offers summer employment
opportunities at local parks. Positions include recreation assistants, junior life
guards, locker attendants, pool clerks and camp counselors.
• LAUSD STUDENT WORKERS
Through this program, The Los Angeles Unified School District offers student
worker positions at local area high schools.
• LA COMMUNITY COLLEGE CITY SCHOLARS PROGRAM
This program targets recent high school graduates and connects them to one
of the nine Los Angeles community college campuses. The Program is
designed to enroll recent graduates into college-level courses and provides
paid internships in high-growth industries.
