MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA LEADS DELEGATION OF MAYORS TO
STATE CAPITAL TO PROTECT FUNDING FOR CRITICAL
SERVICES

Mayors look to partner with State in solving fiscal crisis
while protecting local resources

LOS ANGELES - Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa today led a delegation of California
mayors to Sacramento to protect critical city services as the State struggles to
close a $21.3 billion budget deficit.
“As mayors of the some of the State’s largest cities, we stand on the front lines
when it comes to protecting our most critical public services, including police, fire,
emergency response and road repair,” Mayor Villaraigosa said.
“We are ready and willing to roll up our sleeves and work with State leaders as
partners in solving this fiscal crisis, but any solution – whether it’s another quick
fix or a long-term structural change – must protect the critical local government
services Californians demand, deserve and fund with their hard-earned tax
dollars.”
Following the defeat of State Propositions 1A-1E, the state is considering
balancing its budget through various measures which includes borrowing up to
eight percent of city and county tax revenues. An eight percent proposed tax
diversion would require a $68 million reduction to L.A.’s general fund revenues.
The Mayors met with State Treasurer Bill Lockyer, State Controller John Chiang
and legislative leaders of both parties in an effort to ensure that budget balancing
actions protect critical city services.
The delegation included San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, Santa Ana Mayor
Miguel Pulido, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, and President of the League
of California Cities and Mayor of Rolling Hills Estates Judy Mitchell.
“We will fight tooth and nail to keep State resources flowing to our cities, our local
governments, and, most importantly, to neighborhoods, communities, and
families across our state,” Mayor Villaraigosa added.
