MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA APPOINTS NEW PENSION
COMMISSIONERS
LOS ANGELES - Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced the appointment of
three new pension commissioners - Adlai Wertman and Dean Hansell to the
City’s Police and Fire Pensions Board, and Roberta Conroy to the Board of
Commissioners of the Los Angeles City Employee Retirement System
(LACERS).
Adlai Wertman - Board of Police and Fire Pension Commission
Adlai Wertman is a Professor of Clinical Management and Organization at the
Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. He is the
founding Director of the Social Enterprise and Business Lab at Marshall, a center
focused on creating new opportunities for civic engagement by the for-profit
sector.
Prior to joining the faculty at Marshall, Wertman spent seven years as President
and CEO of Chrysalis - the only non-profit in Los Angeles devoted solely to
helping homeless change their lives through employment.
Prior to Chrysalis, Wertman spent 18 years as an investment banker. His last
position was Managing Director and Manager of Prudential Securities' West
Coast Public Investment Banking Group.
Wertman is a Senior Fellow at the UCLA School of Public Affairs and a Wexner
Heritage Fellow. He has worked extensively in the Los Angeles community as
founder and Board Member of several non-profits.
Wertman earned his B.A. in Economics from the State University of New York at
Stony Brook and his M.B.A. in Finance, Public Policy Management and Strategic
Planning from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dean Hansell - Board of Police and Fire Pension Commission
Dean Hansell is a partner at Dewey & LeBoeuf, L.L.P. His specialty is in complex
commercial litigation, with an emphasis on antitrust, environmental, trade
practice and insurance litigation. For seven years, was Managing Partner. Prior
to that, he served as counsel to the Federal Trade Commission in the Los
Angeles Regional Office. Hansell also served as Assistant Attorney General to
the State of Illinois.
From 1997-2001, Hansell was Police Commissioner and from 2001-2008 and
Information Technology Commissioner for the City of Los Angeles.
Hansell received the Distinguished Service Medal from the Police Commission in
2001, the Founders Award from the Liberty Hill Foundation in 2009, the Herman
Humanitarian Award from Temple Beth Chayim Chadashim, and the Co-
President’s Award from Lawyers for Human Rights.
From 1980-184, Hansell taught legal ethics at Southwestern University Law
School as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Law. He has authored over 20 book
chapters and law review articles on environmental, antitrust, and insurance law.
Dean Hansell co-founded the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. He
serves on the Board of Directors for the State Bar Foundation, Denison
University, Library Foundation of Los Angeles, L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center,
Community Advocates and Los Angeles Community College Foundation and on
the Advisory Boards for the Asian Pacific American Legal Center and the UCLA
School of Public Health.
Hansell graduated cum laude and with Phi Beta Kappa honors from Denison
University and received his juris doctorate from Northwestern University Law
School.
Roberta Conroy - Los Angeles City Employee Retirement System
Roberta Conroy was a Senior Vice President at The Capital Group Companies,
where she focused on Capital's global institutional investment management
business. Among her responsibilities she served as a trustee of the Capital
Group Foundation. She retired after 23 years with Capital and now dedicates
significant time to community advocacy and philanthropy.
Conroy serves as a National Leadership Council Member for Lambda Legal and
as a Trustee for the California Science Center Foundation.
She completed her undergraduate degree at UCLA and her juris doctorate at
Loyola Law School.
