Building a sustainable future rests at the core of our third goal. With Measure R, in the next four years
we are going to lead the largest mass transit construction program anywhere in the United States of
America.
Last November, Angelenos voted their hopes for a real, viable 21st Century public transportation system. The people did their part. Now it’s time to do ours.

Second Inaugural Address
July 1, 2009
In the next four years, Mayor Villaraigosa will:
• Build eight Measure R rail projects on time or ahead of schedule;
• Work to accelerate all Measure R transit spending;
Expanded Public Transit Choices & Alternatives to Driving
Between FY 2010 and FY 2013 we will open new transit service that provides zero emission (electric train) or lower emission (CNG bus) alternatives to driving.
Gold Line Eastside Extension
The 5.9-mile light rail extension of the Gold Line will connect East Los Angeles from 3rd/Atlantic to Union Station in
downtown Los Angeles, with through service to Pasadena. Opens Summer 2009.
Exposition Line
The 8.6-mile light rail extension (Phase I) will connect Culver City and south Los Angeles to the 7th/Metro station in
downtown Los Angeles. Opens 2010/2011.
The 6.9 mile light rail extension (Phase II) will connect the City of Santa Monica and west Los Angeles to Culver City.
Construction starts 2010.
Orange Line Canoga Extension
The Orange Line Canoga Extension is a 4-mile continuation of the highly successful Orange Line from the existing Canoga station to the Chatsworth Metrolink station using the Canoga right-of-way. Opens 2012.
Gold Line Foothill Extension
The Gold Line Foothill Extension is a 10.5-mile continuation of the Pasadena Gold Line (light rail) from Sierra Madre Village east to Azuza. Opens 2013.
In addition, we will start construction on other new transit lines, including:
Crenshaw Line
The Crenshaw corridor project connects the Exposition Line to LAX at Century Boulevard via the Harbor Subdivision railroad right-of-way. The mode, constructional profile, and alignment will be determined during the environmental process.
Wilshire “Subway to the Sea”
The “subway to the sea” is 13-mile extension of the Purple Line subway from Wilshire/Western to the City of Santa Monica
(approximately Wilshire/3rd).
The project will serve the second highest concentration of jobs in Los Angeles County (after downtown Los Angeles), the
highest ridership bus transit corridor, and the busiest city street. Stops include: the Los Angeles County Museum of Art,
City of Beverly Hills, Century City, and UCLA/Westwood.
Regional Connector
The Regional Connector is a 1.7 mile light rail line that will connect the 7th/Flower Blue Line station to Union Station.
Once opened, riders will be able to board any of the four current and planned rail lines – Long Beach Blue Line, Pasadena Gold Line, Eastside extension, and Expo Line – and travel as far as the terminus of any of the three other lines without a transfer.
