Mayor Villaraigosa will dedicate his second term - first and foremost - to helping lead Los Angeles out of this economic recession. It will begin with training young adults and adults alike for the jobs of tomorrow.
From summer youth jobs and sector-based training to creating living wage jobs through economic development, the Mayor will focus on putting people back to work.
Even though we set a record for new development in our first term bringing in $17 billion of new construction that created 140,000 well-paying jobs, this recession is calling on us to rethink economic development. Mayor Villaraigosa will turn his business team into a jobs team to help entrepreneurs cut through the city’s bureaucracy.

Mayor Villaraigosa’s vision to ensure the prosperity for future generations of Angelenos is rooted deep in the economic development of this active city. By building a thriving middle class, developing vibrant livable communities and creating more and higher quality jobs, the City of Angeles continues to shine as global capital.
Working with the City’s Workforce Investment Board and the Community Development Department, Mayor Villaraigosa is putting Angelenos back to work using six employment strategies: 1) Develop Sector-Based Training Programs; 2) Strengthen the Region’s Workforce Development System; 3) Leverage Public Sector Hiring and Contracting; 4) Connecting Young People to Jobs; 5) Transition Workers from Low Wage Jobs into Living Wage Jobs; and 6) Create Living Wage Jobs Through Economic Development.
Understanding how important a first job can be, Mayor Villaraigosa initiated the Hire LA’s Youth program in the summer of 2006. Since then, it has grown to putting 16,500 young people to work, which represents more students in good jobs than at any time in the last 15 years.
