The Mayor envisions a city that offers its residents opportunities to flourish economically. To achieve this vision, the Mayor’s office is committed to strengthening the Workforce Development System and ensuring that the City’s initiatives align with its economic investments and job creation efforts.

In February 2008, the Mayor unveiled the Workforce Development Strategy that includes six individual strategic components to move 100,000 area residents into living wage jobs. 

They are:

1. Develop Sector Based Training Programs
2. Strengthen the Region’s Workforce Development System
3. Leverage Public Sector Hiring and Contracting
4. Connect Young People to Jobs
5. Move Incumbent Workers into Living Wage Jobs
6. Create Jobs through Economic Development Activities

The City is investing in sector-based training to help Angelenos gain access to quality jobs and career advancement opportunities.  By developing a skilled and trained workforce, we can help grow the local economy and support business expansion.

In his first term in office, Mayor Villaraigosa increased the number of sector-based training programs from just one to ten programs. These programs include:

1.   Green Collar Jobs
2.   Logistics Sector – Bus Driver
3.   Logistics Sector – Entry Level
4.   Logistics Sector – Truck Driver
5.   Construction Sector
6.   Healthcare Career Ladder
7.   Hospitality Sector – Restaurant
8.   Hospitality Sector – Hotel
9.   Utilities
10. BankWorks

Seventeen WorkSource Centers are located throughout the City of Los Angeles.  Serving over 120,000 people each year, WorkSource Centers are designed to connect job seekers with employers. Services include: job resource centers with job listings, phone banks, fax machines, Internet access, job referral information and employment workshops.

Last year alone, over 1,000 Los Angeles area businesses listed job openings with WorkSource Centers. Job openings ranged from manufacturing and industrial positions to childcare employees and highly specialized healthcare workers.
