During the last four years, Mayor Villaraigosa has funded 1,078 units of permanent supportive housing – investing in more units to serve the homeless or those at risk of homelessness than in the previous twelve years combined. 

The Mayor’s Office will work closely with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) and Los Angeles County to better link mental health care, counseling, drug rehabilitation, and other services to permanent supportive housing.

Mayor Villaraigosa is requiring all relevant agencies to provide a total of 2,200 units of permanent supportive housing over the next five years.

In February, the City and LAHSA received the largest award in its history totaling $73 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  This year’s award provides funding for more than 200 homeless programs, including:

$37.3 million in funding for the Supportive Housing Program, providing supportive services, and transitional and permanent housing for homeless individuals and families.

$31.6 million in Shelter + Care housing vouchers.

The Veteran Homeless Initiative combines Section 8 vouchers with case management and clinical services to help homeless veterans find and remain in housing. 

The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles was awarded 840 vouchers representing $7,537,622 in rental subsidy, the second largest award in the nation.

The City of Los Angeles was awarded $28 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to implement the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program.

The funds will be used to create programs to help homeless individuals and families or those who are in danger of becoming homeless to get permanent housing.

The Project 50 initiative moved 50 of the most vulnerable chronically homeless persons from Skid Row into permanent supportive housing. 

After one year, 43 of the individuals who participated in the program remained in supportive housing, bettering their lives and saving costs to the city, county and tax payers.
