Taking action to combat gang violence during the traditionally most-violent summer months, Mayor Villaraigosa launched the innovative Summer Night Lights program in 2008.
An anti-gang initiative that keeps parks open after dark--during the peak hours for gang activity--Summer Night Lights (SNL) provides job opportunities and organized activities for at risk youth, including expanded programming, after-school activities, athletic leagues, arts initiatives and family programs.
For 2010, SNL expanded from 16 parks to 24 citywide.
Check below for schedule and locations.
In 2008, SNL's first year, the program contributed to a dramatic decrease in violent crime, helping to secure the City’s safest summer since 1967.
The communities surrounding SNL parks saw:
A 17% drop in violent gang related crime
And an 86% reduction in gang related homicides
Violent gang activity in Los Angeles is heavily concentrated in scattered pockets throughout the city, and as a result 12 neighborhoods have been identified where rates of violent gang-related crime are at least 400 percent higher then elsewhere in Los Angeles.
The 24 participating SNL parks are located in these neighborhoods, where help is needed most. Enter your address below to find the park nearest you.
Summer Night Lights will be running from Wednesday, July 7 thru Saturday, September 4.
The program's hours are:
Wednesday 7pm -12 midnight
Thursday 7pm -12 midnight
Friday 7pm -12 midnight
Saturday 7pm - 12 midnight
